CHENNAI: Tamil writer D.Jayakanthan, Tamil scholar Silamboli Chellappan and actor Manorama were conferred the Kalaignar Awards for the year 2006 by Murasoli Trust here on Tuesday. The awards, comprising cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and citation, were handed over by Chief Minister and DMK president M.Karunanidhi.
Uniting factor
Felicitating the awardees, Mr.Karunanidhi said though it might be surprising to many that the award, instituted in his name, was given to Mr. Jayakanthan, who was once his bitter critic, it was the Tamil language that united them. He advocated State autonomy in one of his books, which was the cardinal policy of the DMK. Mr. Karunanidhi said he always loved Jayakanthan's writings. The writer was forthright and never minced words while expressing his opinion. He congratulated Silamboli Chellappan for his effective role in the self-respect movement and Manorama for her acting capability. Finance Minister and party general secretary K.Anbazhagan presided over the function. Local Administration Minister and DMK deputy general secretary M.K.Stalin, said the awards were being given every year by the Trust since 1997. Dravidar Kazhagam president K.Veeramani and MGR.Kazhagam president RM.Veerappan felicitated that award winners for their contribution to the Tamil language. The award winners thanked the Chief Minister and the Trust.
