Mayor re-election Bill passed

CHENNAI : The Assembly adopted by a voice vote the Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2007, allowing re-election of the Mayor and deputy Mayor for more than one term.

With the main Opposition party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staying away, the Bill was passed without any debate.

Convening of meeting

The Bill also provides for convening a meeting of the Council at least once each month. In the absence of Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin, who is indisposed following a hip injury, Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veerasamy moved the Bill.
