Two found dead in car

TIRUCHI: Charred bodies of Dorairaj (43) a real estate businessman based at Crawford and his car driver Sakthi (27) of Edamalaipattipudur were reportedly found in a car under suspicious circumstances at Saveriyarapuram on Tuesday morning.

In a separate incident, the businessman's brother, Thangavel (47), a rice mill owner, was found murdered in a field at Mattarapatti in Manikamdam limits. Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Das has formed six teams to nab the culprits. — Staff Reporter

SHRC seeks report on school roof collapse

CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has called for a report from the School Education Department and Pudukottai Collector on the incident of roof collapse at a school at Thirugokarnam on Monday.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a report in The Hindu on the incident, the Commission's full bench, headed by the Chairperson Justice A.S.Venkatachalamoorthy, ordered notice to the Secretary, School Education Department and the Collector to send a report within three weeks.

The report said that 24 children studying in the kindergarten and Standard I sections and a teacher were injured in the collapse. An enquiry by the education department revealed that the building, supported by wooden planks, was an "illegal structure." — Special Correspondent

Term of special officers extended

CHENNAI: The Government on Tuesday introduced a Bill to extend the term of the special officers of certain scheduled cooperative societies for a period of six months beyond February 9.

Introduction of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Societies (Appointment of Special Officers) Amendment Bill became necessary as elections in respect of certain scheduled cooperative societies under the control of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies and other functional registrars were pending due to administrative and other reasons, the Government said.

In all these societies, elections could not be conducted and the elected boards could not be constituted on or before February 9, it pointed out. — Special Correspondent

PMK flays educational institutions

CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S.Ramadoss on Tuesday accused higher educational institutions of not implementing reservation for other backward classes in admission.

In a statement here, Dr.Ramadoss alleged that in the admission to Indian Institutes of Management for the next academic year, reservation had not been followed.

Though the President had given assent for the reservation bill passed by Parliament, necessary government order had not been issued so far. He wanted the order to be specific on how many seats were reserved in each of the institution for OBCs. Monitoring committees should be constituted at various levels and it should be made mandatory for the higher educational institutions to inform the committee the number of OBC students admitted in their institutions, the statement added. — Special Correspondent

Writers' forum meet

PUDUKKOTTAI: The `vaasal' literary meeting organised by the Pudukottai town unit of Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers' Association was held at the Oxford Catering College here on Monday.

Surya Suresh reviewed various short stories that had appeared in the journals during December 2006. `Bharathi Krishnan reviewed the poems that had appeared during the same period .

The president of the town unit of the association, Thangam Moorthy, presided over the meeting. The district president of the association, Rama Ramanathan, the district secretary, Poovannan, and the former district president, S. Ilango, and writer Deepam Muthu, spoke.

Puja utensils unearthed

NAGAPATTINAM: About 10 ancient puja utensils such as a small bell, a `deepa' plate, etc., were unearthed during the construction of a school building at Kothangudi in Tirukkuvalai taluk on Tuesday. All the items were handed over to the Tahsildar.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 87.80 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 502 cusecs and the discharge, 8,013 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Employee held for misappropriation

Tuticorin: The District Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested Thyagarajan (54) on a charge of duping the private company he was working for at Kovilpatti. According to police sources, the accused along with Thangaraja Gopalan, a colleague, misappropriated Rs.13.25 lakh from the company accounts and diverted it for their personal purposes. The police are on the look out for Thangaraja Gopalan, who is at large.

Vijayakant's supporters arrested

RAMANATHAPURAM: Police on Tuesday arrested 25 supporters of the actor-turned-politician Vijayakant protesting against the Income Tax raid on his house in Chennai. Manimaran, district president of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, led the protest held in front of the Head Post Office. They raised slogans against Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

One killed in accident

SIVAGANGA: Mohamed Ibrahim (23), son of Kaja Mydeen of Devakottai, was killed in a road accident at Thiruvegamputtur on Monday. A case has been registered. — Staff Reporter

Two killed in road accident

ERODE: Two men, including a village administrative officer (VAO), were killed in a road accident in Tiruchengode on Monday evening.

According to the Tiruchengode Police, T. Kailasampalayam VAO T. Manivannan and his friend Sakthivel, vice-president of the same village, were travelling on a moped near the Erode Road junction when a bus proceeding to the Tiruchengode hill temple knocked them down.

While Sakthivel died on the spot, Manivannan was rushed to the Erode Government Hospital, where he breathed his last. - Staff Reporter
