BANGALORE: The Bangalore city police on Tuesday produced before the Karnataka High Court Prof. K.S. Venkatesh and Rukmini, both of whom were allegedly picked up and assaulted by the police. A habeas corpus petition by Srinidhi had sought the court's intervention for producing Prof. Venkatesh and Ms. Rukmini, who were picked up by the Bangalore police after Prof. Venkatesh filed a private complaint in a local court against the Visvesha Thirtha swamiji of Pejawar Math. Mr. Srinidhi claimed that the police had picked up Prof. Venkatesh and his sister Rukmini after Prof. Venkatesh had filed a private complaint before the First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM), Bangalore, against the swamiji and six others for allegedly detaining him, assaulting and threatening to kill him. He said the magistrate had directed the K.G. Nagar police to investigate the complaint. In his private complaint, Prof. Venkatesh had said that he was detained and assaulted after his friend had failed to repay a loan of Rs. 12 lakh taken from the seer. When the matter came up, the State Public Prosecutor filed an affidavit detailing the number of cases registered against Mr. Venkatesh. A Division Bench comprising Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice Anand Byrareddy, which is hearing the case, adjourned further hearing on the case after the petitioner sought time to file his counter to affidavit.
