Government move may revive hopes of aspiring teachers

  • Henceforth, Block Education Officers to be appointed only through promotions

    HUBLI: Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti has said that over 40 per cent reservation would be given to candidates who had crossed the age limit for recruitment as teachers.

    The Minister was inaugurating the "Educational Conference" organised by the Karnataka State Educational Officers' Association" here on Tuesday.

    Mr. Horatti said the State Government had begun the process for appointing 25,000 teachers in primary and high schools. The Finance Department had given the sanction. He clarified that the appointments to the posts of Block Education Officer would be done only through promotions. Block education officers working with independent charge and headmasters would get their promotion shortly, he said.

    The State Government was thinking of creating another post of Deputy Director of Public Instruction at the district level to ensure smooth functioning of the department. Plans were afoot to build separate buildings for offices of the Block Education Officers, he sad.

    Elaborating on steps taken to improve the functioning of the Education Department, Mr. Horatti said Jagannath Rao Committee had been set up to give recommendations for the comprehensive development of the education system. Strict guidelines for transfer of teachers had been formed under which criminal cases would be booked against officials violating the norms.

    The Education Department had a budget allocation of Rs. 6,000 crore this financial year and more allocation had been sought in the next budget, he said.

    Mr. Horatti, who delivered a lecture on "Value education" at Sri Swami Vijayanand Saraswati of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashram, underscored the need for making the children inculcate moral values and nationalistic views.

    B.T. Satyanarayana Reddy, President of the Association presided over the function. P.S. Vastrad, Additional Commissioner of Department of Public Instruction, Dharwad; and Senior Assistant Director Venkateshappa spoke.
