Thiruvabharanam brought back

PATHANAMTHITTA: The sacred ornaments of the presiding deity of Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple (Thiruvabharanam) were brought back to the Pandalam palace on Tuesday. The ornaments were taken to the Srambickal palace adjoining Valiyakoickal Sastha Temple to keep them in the palace strong room there. — Staff Reporter

Loco pilot found dead

KOLLAM: A loco pilot at the Kollam shunting yard of the Railways, Chandrashekaran Nair, was found dead on the tracks at the yard here on Tuesday evening. Nair was on duty at the yard from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bombs found in Chavakkad

THRISSUR: Four powerful bombs were found at Kurukkanchal, east of Mannalamkunnu, near Chavakkad, on Tuesday, according to the police. The explosives were kept in plastic buckets and covered with sawdust. The bomb squad defused the bombs on a beach near Mannalamkunnu. The chemicals used in the bombs are being analysed by the police. - Staff Reporter

Buses to ply

KOTTAYAM: Private buses in the district would operate as usual on Thursday, according to Private Bus Operators Association. The decision not to join the automobile strike was taken in view of the Feast of St. Sebastian at St. Mary's Forane Church, Athirampuzha and other festivals, they said. - Staff Reporter

Record hundi collection

THRISSUR: A sum of Rs.2.02 crore was collected in hundi at the Guruvayur Sreekrishna temple in the past three weeks, Guruvayur Devaswom administrator V. Ratheesan has said. "This is a record collection," he added. Devotees offered 4.66 kg gold and 19.25 kg silver at the temple during the same period.

Accused dies in hospital

THRISSUR: A remand prisoner at the Viyyur Central Jail died at the Government Medical College at Mulankunnathukavu here at 9.45 p.m. on Monday.

Shaji, 38, of Kuttiyathode Koyikkal Nikathil House, Cherthala, accused in a theft case, complained of chest pain while being brought by the police from Kochi to Viyyur on Monday and was hospitalised. There are allegations that Shaji complained of chest pain after being given third degree treatment. But jail officials refuted the allegations, saying the accused was a cardiac patient and died of heart attack. - Staff Reporter
