NABARD's Rs.1115.78-cr. credit plan for Kanyakumari district

Nagercoil: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has prepared a Rs.1115.78-crore potential-linked credit plan (PLP) for the year 2007-08 for Kanyakumari district.

Speaking to The Hindu, the Assistant General Manager of NABARD, P. Sadasivam, said that the plan has been prepared based on the assessment of the exploitable potential in various sectors, agriculture and its allied activities, non-farm and other priority sectors. Infrastructure available and likely credits to be developed by the private sector and other Government programmes for agriculture and allied activities have been taken in to consideration while assessing the potential for credit dispensation. The plan projections have been restricted keeping in view the actual potential available and projected a realistic figure of credit requirements in the district.

Mr. Sadasivam briefed the methodology, the structure of PLP, sectors covered, assessment of various farm and non-farm activities and infrastructure support.

The document presented contained a detailed block-wise and sector-wise potential plan, which will be the basis for the preparation of the village service area plans for the district to be implemented by various bankers.

Of the credit outlay projected for the year 2007-08, (Rs.1115.78), a sum of Rs.460.16 crore would be spent for agriculture and its allied activities, Rs.144.72 crore for non-farm sector and Rs.510.90 crore for other priority sector.

The 2007-08 PLP was Rs.466.39 crore more than 2006-07 PLP.

He further added that propagation of drip and sprinkler irrigation was essential for better water management especially in horticulture and vegetable growing areas.

The methodology adopted to sanction the sum of Rs.1115.78 crore under Potential Linked Credit Plan was scientific assessment of long term and realizable potential, assessment in tune with the existing and proposed infrastructure and support services, past trends in ground level credit, consultations with line departments and banks and farmers' response, said Mr. Sadasivam.

The following sectors would be covered under PLP such as crop loan, minor irrigation, land development, farm mechanization, plantation and horticulture, medical aromatic plants, forestry and waste development, animal husbandry, storage godowns and market yards, rural non-farm sectors and agro processing units.

As the availability of skilled manpower in this district was more, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development hopes to achieve the Potential Linked Credit Plan for the year 2007-08, he said
