TIRUVANNAMALAI: The newly-created Tiruvannamalai region of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), functioning under the control of the TNSTC, Villupuram Division, was inaugurated by the Transport Minister K.N. Nehru here on Monday. He also laid the foundation for the TNSTC regional office at Thenimalai on Thandrambattu Road. Mr. Nehru said that 17,200 buses were being operated and 1.20 lakh employees were working in the TNSTC throughout the state. In the previous regime, the corporation incurred a loss of Rs.150 crore a year despite the fact that 1.75 crore passengers travelled daily in the TNSTC buses. After M. Karunanidhi took over as Chief Minister last year, he ordered the purchase of 2,230 buses. Another 300 buses were to be bought. The Government would purchase 3,000 new buses a year and meet the entire bus requirements of the State in the next five years. He gave an assurance that all the demands placed by the Food Minister E.V. Velu and the demands of the MLAs for operation of new bus routes would be fulfilled. Mr. Velu, who presided, said nine new depots were to be started in Tiruvannamalai. During the current year, 42 new buses in 25 mofussil bus routes and nine new buses in 19 town bus routes were introduced, benefiting 12,000 people in 50 villages. Tiruvannamalai Collector Satyabrata Sahoo, Tiruvannamalai MLA K. Pitchandi, Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation Managing Director P. Kannan, TNSTC Villupuram Division General Manager K.R. Chandrasekharan, Vellore Region General Manager K.H. Shajahan participated.
