NEW DELHI: With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly due to resume its sitting on Wednesday, the Congress reiterated that Chief Minster Mulayam Singh Yadav should step down since he had lost the "moral authority" to continue. AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot, in-charge of party affairs in the State, said reports suggested that Mr. Yadav may resort to "horse trading" to ensure that the Government, which had lost the support of the Rashtriya Lok Dal and the Congress, could survive. Mr. Gehlot sought to know why Mr. Yadav was desperate to hold on to power when elections were due in the State. "There is no need for a floor test. Mr. Yadav has lost the moral right to continue. He should step down and pave the way for holding free and fair polls," he told journalists here. Samajwadi Party leaders were also deliberating on the action to be taken in the event of the verdict in the Bahujan Samaj Party defection case going against them. "The Governor should take note of all these developments," Mr. Gehlot said.
