JVV joins healthcare movement

Staff Reporter

Plans to conduct State-level workshop in March

  • Cooperation of service organisations sought
  • Government accused of encouraging corporate hospitals

VIJAYAWADA: Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) has joined `Jana Swasthya Abhiyan' (JSA), a national movement launched by some like-minded organisations to strengthen Government hospitals and to fight for better medical facilities to the poor.

The JSA will conduct `National Health Assembly-2007' at Bhopal for three days from March 23, while the JVV plans to conduct a State-level workshop in the city in the last week of March. The JVV is seeking the participation of various individuals and service organisations in the movement.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, JSA State co-convener M. Geyanand accused the Central and the State Governments of escaping from the responsibility of protecting public health. The Governments were, in fact, leaving the field open to corporate hospitals.

"From cardiac surgeries for children with heart ailment to medical reimbursement to public servants, the State Government is paying huge amount to corporate hospitals and helping their growth," he said.

Dr. Geyanand felt that strengthening corporate hospitals would pose a threat to Government hospitals. "Private hospitals have already gained an upper hand over Government hospitals in terms of infrastructure and facilities. The Government should not allow them to grow further, as it would lead to the closure of hospitals run by it," he observed.

    Programmes listed

Dr. Geyanand said that the JSA would conduct workshops, surveys and exhibitions on health-related issues.
