IRA reduces hike in third party insurance premium from 150 to 70 p.c.

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners Association has announced withdrawal of their indefinite strike with the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) reducing the hike in third party insurance premium from 150 per cent to 70 per cent.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, association president and management committee member of All India Motor Road Transport Association, P. Gopal Naidu, K. Rajeshwar Rao, general secretary, and others said the Government has also agreed to refund the `excess money' paid since first of this month.

Giving a brief overview of the reasons for calling the strike, Mr. Rao said that lorry owners all over the country opposed the `arbitrary' increase in the third party premium rates by the IRA. However, the latter notified the hike from January 1, he said.

Mediation

A decision to go on a strike was taken at the All India Motor Congress Managing Committee held in Vijayawada last month. But, the Finance and Surface Transport Ministries mediated with the IRA following which it agreed to reduce the proposed hike of 150 per cent by 50 per cent.

This was not acceptable to lorry owners and they were for a rise of 50 per cent. Senior officials of both the Ministries intervened and ensured that the hike was reduced by 80 per cent. The Association members said a break away faction, All India Confederation of Goods Vehicle Owners Association, has decided to continue the strikebut it would have no impact as their numbers were small.
