HYDERABAD: A day before dedicating the 210 MW first unit of the expansion project of Rayalaseema Thermal Power Station (RTPS) to the nation, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Wednesday announced a plan to expand the station by taking up yet another unit of 500 MW capacity. This will take its total capacity to 1,340 MW. The station now has two 2 MW units and the expansion project will add two more of equal capacity. The second unit of the expansion project will be synchronised in May.
Infrastructure ready
The new 500 MW unit is being taken up in view of the readily available infrastructure--sufficient extent of land, coal linkage from Singareni Collieries and water availability from Mylavaram-Owk immediately and from Brahmamgari Matham reservoir of the Telugu Ganga project in future. It will be commissioned by 2008. Reviewing the power supply situation here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister noted that any expansion of the RTPS, which was strategically located in the middle of Rayalseema at Muddanur in Kadapa district, would greatly improve voltage and ensure quality and reliable power to the region. An official said later that AP Genco had taken up a massive programme to add a capacity of 6,653 MW within the next few years at an estimated outlay of Rs 25,822 crores. The new projects are: Upper Jurala (234 MW), Lower Jurala (234 MW), Vijayawada Stage IV (500 MW), Kakatiya Thermal I and II (1,000 MW), Nagarjunasagar Tail Pond (50 MW), Pochampad Unit IV ( 9 MW), Kothagudem Stage VI (500 MW), gas-based project near Karimnagar (2,100 MW) and Krishnapatnam (1,600 MW). Besides, the State would get a share of 1,600 MW out of the 4,000-MW ultra mega project taken up by the Government of India at Krishnapatnam.
