Official accused of swindling money meant for students

SEEING RED: Students led by SFI staging a dharna in front of the district BC Welfare Office in Anantapur on Tuesday.

ANANTAPUR: The district unit of Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a dharna in front of the District Backward Classes Welfare Office here on Tuesday alleging irregularities in the disbursement of scholarships in Dharmavaram.

The SFI activists, led by S. Noor Mohammed, J. Uday Kumar and C. Somasekhar Reddy also demanded suspension of the Assistant BC Welfare Officer of Dharmavaram, who had allegedly swindled scholarship money. They alleged that the ABCWO was swindling money from the scholarship amounts of all Government and private colleges coming under his purview.

The officer had also got the scholarship application forms sold at Rs. 10 an application, though they had to be given free. He had sanctioned scholarships to the students of private colleges first by collecting Rs. 100 from each student. Further, the officer was also collecting 6 per cent of mess bills of hostel students for their sanction, the SFI leaders charged.

As a result, the hostel students were not getting nutritious food in the remaining amount. They also alleged that the Government was delaying the sanction of Rs. 7.5 lakhs required for scholarships to 15,000 day-scholar applicants. K. Sanjay Prabhakar, District BCWO, promised the students to inquire into the charges against the Dharmavaram ABCWO and take action if he was found to be guilty.
