LUCKNOW: The Congress has demanded a CBI inquiry into the Kareli madrasa gangrape case. In a memorandum submitted to Governor T.V. Rajeshwar on Tuesday, a party delegation, led by State unit president Salman Khurshid and Congress Legislature Party leader Pramod Tiwari, demanded that the two victims of the alleged gangrape be given a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each. Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the victims. The memorandum also mentioned the Firozabad incident wherein a police inspector allegedly thrashed two youths for "masterminding a kidnap." It said cases of police high- handedness were common in the Samajwadi Party rule. Talking to newsmen, Mr. Khurshid and Mr. Tiwari said the Congress was willing to support a Bharatiya Janata Party sponsored no-confidence motion against the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government. If the BJP initiated talks with the Congress, the party would support the move. The Assembly session begins on Wednesday after five days. It is likely to conclude on Thursday with Mr. Singh seeking a vote of confidence on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address.
