Plea against former DGP dismissed

Case linked to son's admission in college under NRI quota

BHOPAL: The First Additional District and Sessions Judge of Indore, Akhilesh Pandya has dismissed the complaint against former Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP), Swaraj Puri regarding his son's admission to the Indore Engineering College under the NRI quota.

Responding to a petition by a former Bharatiya Janata Party corporator, Mahesh Garg, the judge has said in his order passed on Monday that there was no ground to proceed against the former DGP and the other accused.

Mr. Puri was facing the charge that he had wrongly shown an Indore businessman Babulal Somani as his son, Shreyas' NRI grandfather to get him admitted to the Govindram Sakseria Institute of Technology and Science at Indore under the NRI quota.

The Economic Offences Wing of the State Government had lodged a first information report (FIR) and registered a crime against Mr. Puri on September 21, 2007 under section 156(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code CrPC on being asked by an Indore Court to investigate the matter.

The next day, Mr. Puri was removed as DGP and appointed as Director General Home Guards.

The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court had earlier quashed the FIR against Mr. Puri but allowed the EOW to continue with its investigations.

The First Additional District and Sessions Judge of Indore has termed the EOW's "findings" as wrong and dismissed the case against Mr. Puri.
