NSS volunteer drowns in farm well
Staff Reporter
TAMBARAM
: A second year student of an arts college and also a volunteer of the National Service Scheme, drowned in a farm well at Santhoshapuram near Tambaram on Tuesday.
S. Loganathan, 19, of Anna Nagar, Chengalpattu and 88 others of Vel's College of Arts and Science in Pallavaram had gone to Santhoshapuram of Vengaivaasal Village Panchayat on Saturday for a camp.
They were staying at Rajeswari Marriage Hall. As part of the camp events, the students had involved themselves in community activities, including cleaning of temple premises and schools. On Tuesday, the students were scheduled to take part in plantation of saplings from 10 a.m. onwards. Loganathan, son of a Railway employee, and six others went to a huge farm well.
While three of them did not enter the water, the rest took turns in jumping into the water and coming back to the surface. While the group prepared to leave, Loganathan went in for one last dip and failed to resurface. His friends informed staff who in turn alerted the police.
Personnel from the Tambaram Station of the Fire and Rescue Services Department visited the spot and retrieved the youth's body after a search for more than thirty minutes. Police said the youth did not know to swim.
