BERHAMPUR: Members of the Constable and Havildars' Association demonstrated in front of Berhampur Superintendent of Police Dayal Gangwar at Ambapua reserve police barracks against suspension of two of their colleagues on Tuesday.

They gheraoed the SP for more than an hour and shouted slogans demanding that the orders be cancelled. But Mr. Gangwar did not agree to it. He reprimanded the agitators that they could have intimated their grievance through proper channel and that "indiscipline actions" like this would not be tolerated in the police force.

On Monday, during the inspection of the barracks, the SP suspended two constables - Nrusinha Mohapatra and Simanchal Sahu - as they were not in their uniform. Wearing of uniform was mandatory for policemen at the barracks on Mondays.

Speaking to newsmen, Mr. Santosh Kumar Satpathy, president of the Constable and Havildars' Association, Berhampur, who led the agitation, said that the SP was not justified to suspend constables on minor issues as it would affect their service career.

Mr. Simanchal Sahu, one of the suspended constables, who was to retire in the next few months, said that he was not wearing the uniform on Monday during the inspection as he was on his way to sort out his pension papers after taking the permission from the authorities.

Mr. Nrusinha Mohapatra said he had not done anything wrong to get suspended. "I have taken leave to attend a feast and even showed the permission letter to the SP," he said.

He was confident that the orders would be revoked. Yet, he feared that this would surely become a black spot in his service record.
