ERODE: There are 532 dyers in the district and only 25 per cent of them have installed Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants. The rest continue to discharge untreated effluents into drains, contaminating Kalingarayan Canal and the Cauvery river, according to a survey conducted by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB). TNPCB officials submitted the list recently following an order from the Madras High Court. Over 300 dyeing units have no treatment plants and a few others even with the plants continued to discharge the effluents into the drains. Dyers claim that installation of RO plants that filter harmful chemicals is a very expensive proposition.
Notices issued
Collector D. Karthikeyan said despite notices issued to over 200 dyeing units to erect RO plants, contaminated water was being discharged into Kalingarayan canal. The notices are being followed up.
