HYDERABAD: AP State Road Transport Corporation will be forced to increase the bus fares if the occupancy ratio (OR) does not improve, its Chairman Gone Prakash Rao said here on Tuesday. Coupled with the poor patronage is the spiralling price of fuel that has added to the woes of the largest transport corporation in the world, Mr. Prakash Rao said at a function to give away awards for APSRTC drivers and mechanics for their performance in getting high mileage from each kilometre of diesel consumed by the buses. The function was organised jointly by APSRTC and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.
Mr. Rao appealed to people to prefer RTC buses, instead of autorickshaws and private jeeps, to improve the occupancy ratio. He told RTC workers that their goal should be achievement of 70 per cent OR by encouraging people to patronise RTC. "The corporation will be forced to hike the fares by either two or three paise a km, if the OR does not improve."
