THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboodiri has called for setting up of a school for creative writing to hone the skills of aspiring poets in the State. He was speaking at a Meet-the-writer programme organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club here on Tuesday. "Poetry is not just emotion, but an intellectual exercise. To come up with a good Malayalam poem, one has to learn the language and literature thoroughly," said the poet, popularly known as Akkitham. One of the most quoted poets in Malayalam, Akkitham's `Irupatham Noottandinte Ithihasam' (The epic of the 20th century) written nearly 54 years ago paved the way for modernism in Malayalam poetry. So far, Akkitham has written 46 books of poems, plays, translations, essays and short stories. His translation of the `Bhagavatham' in three volumes is regarded a masterpiece. The octogenarian who won this year's award for poetry instituted by the Mahakavi Pandalam Kerala Varma Smaraka Samithi said the proposed school should be named after Pandalam Kerala Varma.
