Thiruvananthapuram: The police have arrested six Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers in connection with the communal violence at Balaramapuram on Monday evening. The accused were produced before the court on charges of inciting communal violence, unlawful assembly, rioting and destruction of property and remanded to judicial custody for a period of 14 days. The police have registered a separate case of arson in connection with the attempt to torch a textile shop at Balaramapuram early on Tuesday. Vehicles entering and leaving Balaramapuram were being checked, said Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Arun Kumar Sinha. Prohibitory orders would remain in place at Balaramapuram till Thursday, said District Collector N. Ayyappan. A peace meeting would be called soon. MP Pannian Ravindran and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala visited the troubled area.
