Security situation reviewed

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Union Home Secretary V. K. Duggal on Tuesday held a meeting with top intelligence officials to review the security arrangements for the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin who will be the guest of honour at the Republic Day Parade on Friday.

Delhi Police Commissioner K.K. Paul also attended the meeting.

Dr. Paul briefed the Home Secretary on the measures being taken as part of the security arrangements in the Capital. Defence Secretary, Director Intelligence Bureau, Special Secretary Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Special Secretary Internal Security also attended the two-hour-long meeting and briefed Mr. Duggal on various threat perceptions and counter-terrorism measures.

It is learnt that the Delhi police have so far not received any major input about any possible terrorist strike during the Republic Day celebrations this year. Nevertheless, Dr. Paul said all necessary precautions were being taken to ensure peaceful celebrations. As part of the security arrangements, vehicles will not be allowed to be parked in the parking lots of Metro and railway stations from 7 p.m. onwards on January 25 till the function gets over. The entire parade route from Vijay Chowk to Red Fort would be under constant surveillance through closed-circuit television cameras, for which a monitoring room has been set up.
