NEW DELHI: Delhi University students are all set to experience a learning of a different kind when they step into an online classroom beginning next month. The University is all set to launch an online classroom on January 31 where teachers sitting at a distance can give lectures and notes to students with the help of computers, LCD projectors, cameras and electronic slates. To be inaugurated by Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental, the new set-up aims to provide a regular class environment to students using technology. "We have to understand that technology is an enabler not an impediment. Everything remains the same. The only thing is that the teacher is at a distance and not physically in front of students. This is the biggest advantage of this system because it offers education without having to displace the teacher. They will use electronic slates instead of blackboards," informed South Campus director Dinesh Singh on Tuesday. However, the teachers will remain as "accessible" as before, he insisted. "As we have cameras at both the ends, the students can see the teacher and vice versa. In case the former have a problem, they can either raise their hands as they normally do in a classroom or can press a button on their personal computer. Another advantage of the new system is that teachers can use a lot of electronic slides to explain things to the class," added Prof. Singh, the man behind this concept. Not just this, but since the entire teaching procedure will be recorded, all those who were not able to attend a class some day could go back and see the recording the next day and see what they missed. "We are starting online teaching with the psychology course and hope to take it across to all the other courses. We are doing this on trial basis but I am sure that through this new system we will succeed in linking different Departments and Colleges of Delhi University and other varsities across the country in the near future," said Prof. Singh.
