Bid to develop a scientific temper

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Media Centre for Research and Publication and the Delhi Union of Journalists on Tuesday named their amphitheatre after Aruna Asaf Ali, M. Chalapathi Rao, C.P. Ramachandran and Appan Menon.

In a joint press release here, Delhi Media Centre director and DUJ president S.K. Pande said the two bodies would also start a movement "Journalists for Scientific Temper" from February in order to combat superstition and develop a scientific temper.

The DUJ and the Delhi Media Centre have also expressed their serious concern at the deplorable condition of the journalists and writers and increasing insecurity among them.

In a bid to bring the Press close to the people, a DUJ news digest will also be brought out.

Controversy over lawyers' body polls

New Delhi: Elections to the Patiala House lawyers' association's executive committee here have run into controversy as the present office bearers have declared the results null and void amid allegations of bogus voting even as candidates declared elected celebrated their victory. After a meeting of the office bearers of the New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) held in the court premises, the outgoing President Madan Lal told the repoerters that the elections have been declared null and void and Returning Officers (RO) have resigned.

He further said that exercising his powers under the constitution of the association he had summoned a General Body Meeting in which R S Dhaka has been appointed as the new Returning Officer. He asserted that present Executive Committee is still existing.

Man charred to death

NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old man was burnt to death and another sustained injuries after a fire broke out in a factory at Mangolpuri in North-West Delhi on Tuesday.

According to the Fire Services Department, Amit was charred beyond recognition after the solvent drums kept at the factory caught fire early on Tuesday morning. Ram Niwas (24) sustained minor burnt injuries and was admitted to a nearby hospital.

Three fire tenders took over an hour to put out the blaze. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the police said.

Two arrested

NEW DELHI: An undergraduate student of Dr. Zakir Hussain College and his cousin have been arrested by the East Delhi police for allegedly trying to run over a traffic police constable.

According to the police, the accused, Mohammad Yaseer (19) and Mohammad Nawed (24), were coming from Shakarpur area in a Santro car and jumped the red light at Preet Vihar on Monday. The constable, Rajeev, signalled them to stop and asked them to come out of the vehicle. It led to minor altercation and the two allegedly tried to run over the constable and escape. However, the constable held on to the window of the car and was dragged several feet by the vehicle. Eventually, the two were overpowered with the help of passers-by.
