47 villages selected under development scheme

Staff Correspondent

Scheme will be launched in Raichur district by next month, says official

  • Rs.37.1 crore has been earmarked to implement the scheme
  • To be implemented in the most backward villages

Raichur: The Suvarna Gramodaya Yojane, a scheme launched by the State Government on the occasion of Suvarna Karnataka celebrations, will be launched in Raichur district by next month. The scheme will provide all amenities in the selected villages.

The Government has identified 47 villages in all the five taluks in the district and earmarked Rs.37.1 crore to implement the scheme.

Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat N. Manjunath Prasad told The Hindu on Wednesday that the scheme would help to improve basic facilities and community development in such villages where some basic needs have not been included in other ongoing development schemes. The scheme would be implemented in the most backward villages, he said.

Mr. Prasad said the scheme aims at developing the most backward villages as model ones with all amenities. According to a plan prepared by the zilla panchayat, among the villages identified under the scheme, each village needs more than Rs.3 crore for providing basic amenities. But the scheme provides a maximum of Rs.2 crore to each village. The zilla panchayat has decided to consider the ongoing development works taken up under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme while implementing the new scheme.

He said under the new scheme, the Government had identified six villages with a total population of 23,319 in Raichur taluk, nine villages with a total population of 32,575 in Manvi taluk, 10 villages with a population of 24,742 in Deodurga taluk, nine villages with a population of 33,458 in Lingsugur taluk and 13 villages with a population of 1.48 lakh in Sindhanur taluk. An amount of Rs.6.1 crores each has been provided for Raichur and Deodurga taluks, Rs.8.9 crore for Manvi taluk, Rs.7.60 crore for Lingsugur taluk and 9.1 crore for Sindhanur taluk.

He said that the scheme includes improving roads, construction of tanks, houses and toilets, including the afforestation programme. Both the people below the poverty line (BPL) and the above the poverty line (APL), those are in need of shelter, would be allotted houses and sites, respectively. The identified BPL groups will get free sites and houses under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Scheme, while the APL group will have to pay for the sites allocated to them, he said.

Mr. Manjunath said the scheme would be implemented in coordination with non-governmental organisations and active involvement of elected representatives and the people of the selected villages. The zilla panchayat had selected three NGOs — Samuha, Janakalyana and Prerana — to go ahead with their task by conducting gram sabhas and community meetings in order to identify the amenities required in each village. They had been asked to prepare action plan based on their study and needs of the villagers and submit the action plans on the proposed developmental works in each village, he said. It was expected that the zilla panchayat would get a final approval Government by this month-end. It has been proposed to launch the scheme by February 10, Mr. Manjunath added.
