Sao Paulo team for Super Soccer

NEW DELHI: Over the next fortnight, football fans here will get a treat of Latin football with the Brazilian champion Sao Paulo FC playing five matches against the top Indian club teams in the Super Soccer 2007 event.

The team arrived in the capital early on Wednesday morning and will head for Siliguri to play its opening match against East Bengal on Saturday. Mohammedan Sporting, Mohun Bagan, Kerala XI and JCT Mills are the other clubs that Sao Paulo FC will play against.

The Indian Football Association (IFA) had launched Super Soccer concept in 1984 when Sao Paulo team came here for the first time. This will be its third visit to India having last played in 1989. In 1991, Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, comprising several World Cup stars played the Super Soccer, which remain the best so far in terms of quality of players.

In the current team, central defender Carlinhos and goalkeeper Mateus were the part of the team that won the 2006 Brazilian championship. The rest of the team members are from the Sao Paulo FC's junior programme.

The event is being sponsored by Tata and will be telecast live on NDTV Profit, Star Ananda and Asianet.

The schedule: Jan. 27: Sao Paulo v East Bengal, Kanchenjunga Stadium, Siliguri. Jan. 31: Sao Paulo v Mohammedan Sporting, JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur. Feb. 4: Sao Paulo v Mohun Bagan, Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. Feb. 7: Sao Paulo v Kerala XI, Nehru Stadium, Kochi. Feb. 11: Sao Paulo v JCT Mills, Ambedkar Stadium, Delhi.
