BERHAMPUR: Pressure of studies and career cannot suppress the artistic talents. Students of the second hostel of the MKCG Medical College took time out of their tight study schedule to toil for 15 days to construct a real life `film set' of a seacoast with a 20-metre-long pirate ship and a 50-metre long five hooded `Basuki' snake for the Saraswati puja celebrations. According to coordinator of the students' team behind it, Pranab Kumar Prusty, around 150 medical students of the hostel got together on Jan 4 to decide on the concept of decoration for Saraswati Puja.
Big draw
Twenty-seven students of third year were chosen to materialise the concept and all others were there to provide helping hand. They decided to build the exact replica of the pirate ship of the movie `Pirates of the Caribbean' with a treasure trove, large octopus as the entry gate, turtles, and starfishes all around. To add up Indian touch a large mythical `Basuki' serpent with five hoods entwined around the pirate ship on the podium under which the deity was placed. The students used straw, clay, paper, gunny bags, bamboo pieces, skulls and bones to prepare the massive set. It cost them around Rs 12,000 that they collected among themselves. Their efforts attracted hundreds of people to their hostel on Tuesday and Wednesday to watch their work with awe. At the first hostel of the medical college the students transformed an unused spot near the hostel into a modern garden with fountains. It also had scenes from Oriya folklore depicted through earthen idols made by students.
