135 acres transferred to ELCOT for IT park in Tiruchi

The park at Navalpattu will include a built up area of about 1 million square feet

  • Plan to get the park declared as a special economic zone for IT and IT-enabled services
  • Construction will commence after obtaining Government approval

TIRUCHI: The information technology (IT) park to be promoted by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) will come up at Navalpattu on the outskirts of the city.

Land measuring 135.04 acres, off the Tiruchi-Pudukottai highway, has been transferred to ELCOT.

The park will include a built up area of about one million square feet, which will be open for allotment apart from plots to be constructed by the ELCOT.

The Corporation had also planned to get the park declared as a special economic zone for IT and IT-enabled services, its Managing Director C. Umashankar told The Hindu.

Though there has been much speculation here on the location of the park, the ELCOT and the district officials have settled on the Navalpattu site. "We are looking at the possibility of getting more land adjoining the site at Navalpattu," Mr. Umashankar said. Apart from being revenue land, which made for expeditious transfer, the site was also closer to the airport.

The construction of the ELCOT's built up area will commence after obtaining Government approval. Meanwhile, work on strengthening the approach road to the site is expected to begin soon.

Responding to a query, Mr. Umashankar said that the demand for space in the Tiruchi IT park was as good as those in the other tier-II cities of the State.

The ongoing infrastructure development work at the airport and the four-laning of almost all national highways, are expected to be added attractions for the IT companies to set shop here.

A few IT companies are said to have already evinced interest in getting plots at the park, though officials do not want to divulge details at this stage.
