CHENNAI: The Vedic Sangeeta Foundation has initiated a project to digitally record the Vedas and the Upanishads in an effort to propagate Vedic chants. "The two-year project, estimated to cost about Rs. 2 crore, will involve 30 Vedic scholars and will mostly be funded through public donations. The project will be posted online," A.K. Ramamurthy, founder and trustee of the Foundation, said here recently during the launch of the project on the fourth anniversary of the Foundation. Collaborative efforts were needed among various institutions to preserve the Vedic heritage, N. Gopalaswami, Chief Election Commissioner, said. In 2003, UNESCO had recognised the Vedas as an invaluable oral heritage. During last year's Union Budget, the Finance Minister had announced a Rs 5-crore scheme which would be partly used to support Veda `padasalas' and private institutions and pay a monthly stipend to students. The Vedas were a great human heritage and a lot needed to be done to preserve and foster them, A.P.V.N. Sarma, executive officer, Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam, said. Vedic scholar G. Balasubramania Ganapatigal was honoured on the occasion. Ahobila Mutt jeeyar Srivan Satakopa Narayana Yateendra Mahadesikan and V.V. Subramanian, principal, Vivekananda College, participated.
