Punjab alert over missing defence ID cards

Staff Correspondent

Fears of terrorist strikes during R-Day and Assembly poll

  • Communication received from the Defence and Home Ministries
  • The Army has initiated a multi-pronged probe

CHANDIGARH : Security forces in Punjab have been put on extra alert following the Centre's communication that the identity cards of 87 defence personnel were reported missing. Authorities fear that the documents could be used by terrorists to launch strikes during Republic Day celebrations and the February 13 Assembly elections. The authorities confirmed receipt of communication from the Defence and Home ministries, listing the names, ranks and Army numbers of the personnel whose cards were reported missing. The top brass of the Punjab police are said to be in touch with the Army, especially the Western Command. The Army has already initiated a multipronged probe.

Army authorities and the Central Intelligence Agencies suspect that these cards might have reached terrorists, who may attempt "to gain access to sensitive locations and areas proximate to VVIPs."

S.K. Sharma, Inspector-General of Police, Patiala range, arrived at Mohali, venue of the Republic Day function, to review the security arrangements. He told The Hindu that a terrorist design to create panic was recently unearthed by the State police, who neutralised a module of the militant International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF), in Jalandhar. Three ISYF members were arrested and a huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosives was recovered. Interrogation revealed the plan to disrupt Republic Day celebrations and target important political leaders during electioneering, Mr. Sharma said.
