Teachers fear poll work may hamper SSC results

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The ongoing part summary and part intensive revision of electoral rolls till mid-May could well dash the hopes of the Hyderabad district administration to ensure good results in Government and aided schools in the SSC examination this year.

School managements and teachers involved in the exercise bemoan that the academic curriculum is bound to get `disturbed' on account of the roll revision, for which a large number of teachers were being drafted. There are 158 Government high schools and 130 aided schools in the city and about 1,500 teachers are said to be involved in the election work entailing door-to-door enumeration. Questions are also being raised as to why teachers alone have to be drafted for enumeration.

`Parents complaining'

"Parents are complaining that classes are being cancelled as teachers are out on work," says Sultan Bazar corporator M. Shanker Yadav.

Ironically, this is in stark contrast to the DEO's earlier directions to all headmasters of secondary schools not to depute or relieve any school assistant handling 10th class for any training or deputation and instead utilise their services to improve results.

Selection of teachers for the roll revision exercise is generally the headmaster's prerogative and apparently, some schools have sent teachers of 10th class too for enrolment work. Many point out that all months till April are crucial as concerted efforts are made to complete the syllabi and prepare children for annual examination.

During a recent interaction meeting at the Collectorate Office, education officials told presspersons that pass percentage was between 30 to 35 per cent but their aim was to increase it to 80 per cent this year!
