Kharavela fete gets under way

The K.N. Memorial award conferred on veteran Odissi musician Ramahari Das on the occasion

BHUBANESWAR: Emperor Kharavela was not only the pride of then Orissa but also a great patron of art and culture of the land. Governor Rameshwar Thakur said this while inaugurating the 5th Kharavela national festival at the historic Khandagiri foothills here on Wednesday.

Rich heritage

The week-long festival is being hosted by the city-based K.N. Memorial Foundation in association with the State Government and the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata. Speaking on the occasion, Culture Minister S.N. Patro, Tourism Minister Debi Prasad Mishra and former legislator S.C. Rourtay paid rich tributes to Kharavela and emphasised the rich cultural heritage of the State.

Veteran Odissi musician Ramahari Das was conferred the K.N. Memorial award on the occasion for his contribution to Orissan culture.

Cultural programmes

The inaugural evening showcased Odissi dance by Durga Charan Ranbir's `Nrutyayan' troupe followed by Gotipua dance of Raghurajpur, Purulia Chhau dance and Bihu dance of Assam.

Nearly 800 artistes from 15 States are participating in the event.
