NEW DELHI: With instances of leopards straying into human habitats and causing harm on a steady rise, wildlife organisations and the Ministry of Environment and Forest are looking at evolving a national policy to effectively manage the intensifying man-animal conflict. The reasons for the conflict and the management techniques to be adopted were discussed at a two-day workshop on "National Policy on Human-Leopard Conflict Management", jointly organised by Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and Union Ministry of Environment and Forest, that concluded on Wednesday. "With the increase in human-leopard conflict, a national-level policy needs to be formulated to tackle the problem," said P. S. Easa, Senior Director, Conservation, WTI. Guidelines should be in place on the measures to be taken if an animal is captured, translocated or sent to a lifetime care centre, said Dr. Easa. With the rising fear psychosis among the local population on spotting an animal, the workshop also discussed the need to bring about a change in the attitude of the people.
