A tale of displacement....

"ONCE MORE REMOVED": A journey back to India

New York-based filmmaker Shundell Prasad's attempts to unravel the reason behind her Indian looks culminated in a documentary "Once More Removed''. The film that documents a young girl tracking her roots also strives to bring to light the stories of atrocities committed against the Indian diaspora in East Africa, Guyana and Fiji that remain untold.

The 52-minute documentary spans across three continents as Shundell, whose parents migrated to New York from Guyana, uncovers the reasons behind her family's removal from their native India. Her grandparents left India during the British rule and later her parents migrated out of their birth country, Guyana. "Once More Removed'' is an Indo-Caribbean film that chronicles a young woman's search for her roots. The film documents her journey from Guyana as she sets about getting ship records from the National Archives to the ports of Calcutta where the East India Company ships carried human cargo out of India to distant lands. From Calcutta, the film takes the viewers into the land of the Shundell's ancestors in Bihar. -- Smriti Kak Ramachandran
