CESSPOOL: Stagnant sewage at MGR Nagar, Surampatty Valasu. - Photo: M. Govarthan
ERODE: Ward 18 in Surampatty Municipality has poor sewerage facility, forcing the residents to endure stench from stagnant sewage and mosquito bites. At MGR Nagar, water let out by residents runs along the Anaikattu Road and collects at a junction, from where it overflows across the road to vacant lands on the other side of the road.
Mosquito menace
Residents complain that for most of the past 10 years the area has had no civic amenities worth a mention. "For almost a decade, the drain flows right in front of my house only to stagnate at the pool," rues resident B. Selvi. She adds that the stagnant pool serves as a fertile mosquito-breeding place.
No waste bins
"There is so much mosquito that one cannot spend a few minutes in the morning for `kolam', and the same in the evening, when we rush inside our homes and shut all doors and windows of our houses." Compounding the problem is the absence of bins at the area. Majority of the 200-odd houses at the Nagar and neighbouring MSK Nagar dump garbage at street corners, which with the slightest of breezes spreads over vacant places. Residents further say that their demands for a sewerage system have remained just that for about five years. They say they want the recently elected Surampatty Municipal Council to provide them basic civic amenities.
