Plan to showcase Buddhist sites

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: With an eye on tapping the spiritual tourism potential in China, the Tourism Ministry is planning to open an office there to showcase Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India.

This was announced by Tourism Secretary A.K. Misra at a conference "Positioning India as a Hub for Buddhist Tourism,'' organised by FICCI here.

The Chinese version of Incredible India website, to promote India as an attractive destination, would be formally launched during the visit of the Chinese Tourism Minister on February 12.

The Ministry planned to attract South Asian tourists to Buddhist sites here and India Tourism overseas offices in Singapore and Tokyo were promoting such circuits in a big way.

Beijing would be 14th overseas office of India Tourism after New York, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Milan, Toronto, Dubai, London, Johannesburg, Amsterdam, Sydney, Paris, Tokyo and Singapore.

A "Bodh Parikarma Train," which would be launched on March 28, would cover all-important Buddhist destinations, he said.
