Coimbatore: Security has been tightened in and around Coimbatore city in view of the Republic Day celebrations. The security cordon will continue till Saturday morning. According to the police, the security measures are not because of any alert of impending trouble, but only as a precaution. In Coimbatore city, additional armed police have been deployed in sensitive pockets and patrol vehicles have been pressed into service for a round-the-clock vigil.
Vehicle checks
Checkposts on all arterial and feeder roads have been strengthened with armed guards and vehicle checks have been stepped up. In the city, the security measures are under the supervision of Commissioner of Police C.K. Gandhi Rajan and Deputy Commissioners of Police K. Shanmugavelu (Law and Order) and R. Tamil Chandran (Crime). The police said armed guards had been posted at all vital installations such as telephone exchanges, treasury and banks besides petroleum and LPG depots and TNEB sub-stations.
Passengers frisked
Vigil has been stepped up at the airport, railway station and bus stands. Passengers are frisked and luggage is scanned at the railway station. Passengers have been advised to arrive at the station well ahead of the departure time. Railway authorities have restricted booking of parcels and cargo as a precautionary measure. Similarly, security has been tightened across the district and along the State border under the supervision of Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Coimbatore Range, M.N. Manjunatha and Superintendent of Police A.T. Duraikumar. Additional reinforcements from the Armed Reserve and the Tamil Nadu Special Police battalion have been mobilised.
