CHENNAI: About 200 outstanding students of an essay contest hosted by St. Gallen University, Switzerland, would win a chance to interact with eminent personalities of the world at St. Gallen's international symposium during May. The concept of conducting St. Gallen symposium evolved in 1969, which was entirely a students' initiative. Aiming to evoke discussion on burning issues associated with global development, the International Students' Committee was formed to conceive and organise the event. This year's theme of the three-day symposium from May 31 is `Power of Natural Resources.' Christian Horn, relationship manager for India, St. Gallen symposium, during his visit to Chennai on Thursday, said "the symposium would provide platform for intergenerational and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas between the global decision makers of today and tomorrow." About 600 delegates from across the world would participate in the event. On his month-long stay in India, he said "I am here to meet prominent persons in fields such as business, politics, science and society and convince them to be part of the symposium." Last year, a delegation of 25 persons from India participated in the event, of which 5 were speakers. This year, B. Muthuraman, managing director of Tata Steel and Brian W. Tempest, executive vice chairman of Ranbaxy Laboratories, would address the symposium. Sarthak Behuria, chairman of Indian Oil Corporation, N.M. Nilekani, managing director of Infosys Technologies and Kamal Nath, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, were expected to participate, Mr.Horn said. Students across the globe may apply either through post or email for the St. Gallen's Wings of Excellence Award with their essay on the theme of symposium, he said. Deadline for submission of application is February 2. For details, log on to www.stgallen-symposium.org.
