Letters to the Editor
This refers to the Supreme Court's order staying the conviction of Navjot Singh Sidhu in a road rage death case. His re-nomination for the Amritsar-2 Lok Sabha seat he vacated makes the whole episode a mockery of justice and pooh-poohs morality, equity and fair play. Mr. Sidhu was a good cricketer and is a fine entertainer. But that should not entitle him to special treatment. One hopes he will desist from contesting the election until he is exonerated. He will not lose anything if he does not become an MP in such indecent haste.

The stay on Mr. Sidhu's conviction is not at all justified. The court's observation that he would suffer irreparable injury if he was not able to contest the seat is strange. The stay will encourage other offenders in road rage cases to plead for similar lenience.
A.K. Azad,
* * *
After having been convicted by the High Court, Mr. Sidhu showed extraordinary moral conviction and voluntarily resigned as MP. But his moral posturing stands compromised by his willingness to re-contest from the same constituency. The BJP, the party with a difference, too has not covered itself with glory by deciding to field him.
