Elephant found dead

Hosur: An elephant was found dead in a sugarcane field near the Aiyur reserve forests on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border on Wednesday. Forest officials ruled out the involvement of poachers in the incident, as the elephant's tusk remained intact. Forest officials are investigating. — Staff Reporter

Missing boys traced

VILLUPURAM: The Kottakuppam police have traced the five boys who went missing from January 12. A special team led by Sub-Inspector Kaliyaperumal located them at a farm at Karaikurichi in Karanataka and brought them here on Thursday.

Inspector Jawaharlal told presspersons that the boys would be handed over to their parents.

The special team pursued the lead obtained from the local sources and traced them in Karnataka. — Special Correspondent

PDS rice seized

Dharmapuri: As many as 11 tonnes of rice, meant for supply under the Public Distribution System, was seized by officials here on Thursday. Two persons were arrested. Acting on instructions from Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal, the officials conducted vehicle checks on the Salem-Bangalore Highway and they intercepted a lorry laden with the rice bags. The lorry was proceeding to Kanakapura for sale and subsequent polishing in the open market. The vehicle was impounded. The Food Cell police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

PMK's appeal to Government

CHENNAI: The State Government should urge the Centre to appoint only judges who knew Tamil to the Madras High Court, the PMK said on Thursday.

Expressing concern over the increase in the numbers of judges who do not know Tamil at the Madras High Court, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said in a press release that out of 45 judges, five were from other States, including the Chief Justice. — Special Correspondent

TERI award for Andaman and Nicobar

CHENNAI: The Andaman and Nicobar administration has won The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) State Award for Innovative Sustainable Development Initiatives 2006-07 under the `Special Mention' category. The award was given in recognition of the Union Territory's initiative in ensuring sustainable livelihoods for 900 Nicobaree tribal families in Car Nicobar through a vegetable cultivation scheme. Naresh Kumar, Resident Commissioner, received the award from Vishva Mohan, Joint Secretary-cum-Project Director, a press release said. Gujarat won the first prize for its water harvesting and groundwater recharging initiatives in Junagarh district and Uttarkhand bagged the second prize for involving students in afforestation activities. — Special Correspondent

44th Raising Day at OTA

CHENNAI: The Officers Training Academy celebrated its 44th Raising Day on Wednesday by honouring civilian employees for their meritorious service, a press release here said.

"OTA staff should work towards moulding Officer Cadets in the service of the nation," Brigadier William Isaaks, Officiating Commandant, said, adding that the passing-out courses SSC-83 and WSES (O)-29 should work in the true spirit of the OTA. — Special Correspondent

Special buses

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Tiruchi, will operate about 100 special buses to Palani, Samayapuram, Vayalur, Viralimalai, Kulithalai, Palamalai, Vadalur and Chettikulam from various parts of Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur districts on January 31 and February 1 in view of the Thai Poosam festival. The buses will be operated round the clock and advance bookings could be made at Tiruchi Central and Chathram bus stands. Arrangements have been made at the Tiruchi Central Bus Stand to provide adequate rest rooms.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 86.55 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday.

The inflow was 277 cusecs and the discharge, 8,000 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Fast observed

TIRUNELVELI: Opposing the plan to construct four more nuclear rectors at Koodankulam, over 1,000 persons, including 200 women, observed a fast at Koodankulam on Thursday. They said the move would take the level of radiation to a "serious level." They also demanded that the public hearing to be held on January 31 should be conducted at Koodankulam instead of Anu Vijay Township.

Jewellery stolen

OMALUR: A few unidentified persons had stolen seven sovereigns of gold jewellery from a house near here on Tuesday night.

The police said that Ammasigoundar of Kottagoundampatti, a farmer, found the doors of his house broken open and jewellery missing, when he returned from fields.

Eight held

NAMAKKAL: Police on Thursday arrested nine persons on the charges of murder of a local Congress leader in Senthamangalam recently. The police said that a group of unidentified persons reportedly hacked Parivel to death. The arrested included Arulkumar (48), a relative of the deceased, and eight others, all residents of Kerala. They were remanded in judicial custody.

Khadi Board to provide loans

NAMAKKAL: The Khadi and Village Industries Board will provide loans with subsidy to set up new industrial units in the rural areas of the district under the margin money scheme. The objective of the scheme is to generate employment opportunities in rural areas. The maximum amount will be Rs. 25 lakh, a press release from Collector G. Sundaramurthi has said.
