MESSAGE OF CONSERVATION: C.K.Sreedharan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, hands over to Jane Goodall, a brochure on the activities of TREE Foundation.
CHENNAI : Terrible things are happening to Nature and wildlife across the world, renowned primatologist Jane Goodall said here on Wednesday. Sharing her experience in wildlife conservation in different countries with a group of volunteers of the Sea Turtle Protection Force and students, she however felt that the `silver lining in the scenario' was the visible enthusiasm among young conservationists. "I have hope for the future", she noted. Talking about her organisation `Roots and Shoots', Dr. Goodall said it was all about children and youth who involved themselves in wildlife conservation, nature protection and environment related activities. Dr. Goodall mimicked the voice of a chimpanzee and explained that the call was a `hello'. If they (the chimps) know that in India a group was involved in protecting marine life, they would certainly happy, she said. She also added that sooner or later the volunteers of `Roots and Shoots' would visit India and would help in protecting the endangered sea turtles, which were facing serious threats. Releasing a brochure brought out by TREE Foundation, C.K. Sreedharan, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, said it was heartening to note that several youths and children had shown keen interest in protecting the endangered sea turtles.
Duty of everyone
Mr Sreedharan said if the turtles become extinct it would be very difficult to bring them back. So it was the duty of everyone to ensure protection to these gentle giants of the sea. Inspector General Rajendra Singh, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East) flagged off a cycle rally. Ms. Supraja of the TREE Foundation and organiser of the programme said the volunteers would visit fishing villages from Besant Nagar up to Mahabalipuram and distribute pamphlets on sea turtle conservation among fishing community, she said. Dr. Goodall also released a short film `Ambassadors of the ocean' brought out by the TREE Foundation.
