Four Army officers get Kirti Chakra posthumously

President has awarded 393 medals to the uniformed personnel

New Delhi: Anti-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir have earned the prestigious Kirti Chakra, the nation's second highest peacetime gallantry award, for four Army officers, all posthumously.

Besides the Kirti Chakras, anti-terrorist operations have won 73 Sena Medals and one Vayu Sena Medal for the armed forces personnel. The President has awarded 393 medals to the uniformed personnel on the occasion of Republic Day.

Kirti Chakra recipients

The Kirti Chakra recipients include Col. Gurbir Singh Sarna of the Rashtriya Rifles who led his men to smoke out terrorists holed up in a crowded locality at Pattan in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. The officer lost his life in the bold charge.

The other awardees are Maj. Manish Hiraji Pitambare of Parachute Regiment; Capt. Vishal Bhandral of Garhwal Rifles; Lt. Natarajan Parthiban (Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry), all posthumously, and Havildar Manjit Singh of Sikh Regiment.

A Central Industrial Security Force Sub-Inspector Dhirendra Nath Pratap Singh was also awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously for refusing to succumb to an attack by naxalites in Chattisgarh.

Shaurya Chakras

Of the 31 Shaurya Chakras, 12 were awarded posthumously. This included two Border Roads Organisation personnel killed while undertaking road clearance operations in hazardous conditions.

Param Vishisht Seva medals

The President's honours list also includes 19 senior Army officers who have been decorated with Param Vishisht Seva Medals. This includes the new Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Deepak Kapoor, Western Army Commander Lt. Gen. Daljit Singh and Director-General of Military Operations Mohan Pandey.

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has also approved four Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), one Bar to Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, 52 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, one Yudh Seva Medal, four Bar to Vishist Seva Medals, 123 Vishist Seva Medals, two Bar to Sena Medals, 41 Sena Medals, 12 Nao Sena Medals and Vayu Sena Medals (15). — PTI
