VIJAYAWADA: Speakers at a seminar in mathematics organised by the Andhra Loyola College (ALC) on Thursday stressed the need for quality teaching to generate interest among students of all levels to learn mathematics. They wanted mathematics teachers to undergo continuous training in order to make teaching of mathematics a fun-filled and attractive activity. The seminar was titled `Sumedha-2007', and it included an inter-collegiate quiz as well.
Logical thinking
ALC correspondent J. Thainese said knowledge of mathematics would develop sound and logical thinking in young minds in abundant proportion. Fr. Thainese pointed out that quite a good number of students were moving towards IT courses in view of the larger scope for career advancement. Mathematics would give them certain leverage to grab better opportunities. ALC principal S. Emmanuel noted there was a feeling that mathematics was a complicated subject. But students should erase this feeling from their minds. Head of the Mathematics Department N. Madhavilatha, faculty members B. Shyam Prakash and others were present. M. Seetharamaiah from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Hyderabad gave a lecture on `algebraic topology, Galois theory and complex analysis', while Y. Venkateswara Reddy from the Department of Mathematics at the Acharya Nagarjuna University delivered a lecture on `Real analysis, complex analysis, functional analysis, topology and algebra'. Mr. Prakash said the seminar was part of an effort to give proper orientation to students to think creatively to produce research works in future. Teams from KBN College, Sarada College, Maris Stella, Nalanda Degree College, T.J.P.S. College, Guntur and A.N.R. College, Gudivada participated in the quiz. The speakers said the objective of `Sumedha-2007' was to bring together experts from different universities to interact with students.
