All set for Malabar Mahotsavam

Famous persons in arts, culture to participate

KOZHIKODE: All arrangements have been made for the 11th Malabar Mahotsavam (grand festival) here from January 27 to 31.

The festival, organised by the District Tourism Promotion Council, along with the city Corporation and the district administration, will be noted for the presence of famous personalities in the arts and cultural fields, Mayor M. Bhaskaran and District Collector in-charge P. Balan, who is the chairman of the organising committee, told presspersons here on Thursday.

Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the festival at 6.30 p.m. on the beach. A music programme on the inaugural day by Shibani Kashyap, famous Hindi pop singer, will kick off the programmes.

Chandan Das, ghazal singer, will perform on Sunday. A fusion music programme by Balabhaskar and Stephen Devassy, composers, will be the highlight of the festival on Monday.

Mohammed Aslam, singer, will perform at "Rafi nite," accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra, on the beach on Tuesday. "Deepakdev Show — Music Nite," a music programme directed by Deepak Dev, composer, will be held on Wednesday. Vineet Srinivasan and Rimi Tomy will sing.

Anuradha Singh Bhopal, Kathak dancer, will perform at the Tagore Hall at 6.30 p.m. on Monday.

A Carnatic music concert by Vayyankra Madhusoodhanan at Jaya Auditorium on Tuesday and Hindustani music concert by Mahalakshmi Shenoy Karkala on Wednesday are the other music programmes. Folk arts will be performed at Mananchira from Sunday to Wednesday.

A seminar on "Development of Malabar" will be held at the Town Hall on Monday. The District Kalaripayyat Association will organise a Kalaripayyattu show at the Indoor Stadium at 6.30 p.m. on Monday.

The valedictory function on the beach will be inaugurated by Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty.

Answering questions, the Mayor said no additional fund had been sanctioned for the festival. The Government had sanctioned Rs. 1 crore for the Malabar Shopping Festival.

This had been earmarked for prizes for lucky-draw winners at the festival.

The organisers said two Wagon R cars had been given to winners. The third car had not been claimed. The winner of the fourth car was selected through draw of lots on Wednesday. Already, prizes valued at Rs. 72 lakh were distributed.
