Punjab becoming transit route for heroin smugglers

Ludhiana: Punjab seems to be becoming a "transit route" for smugglers to supply heroin to foreign countries as the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 61 kg of the contraband in the State during the past 10 months.

In the last financial year, 10 kg heroin was seized from the State.

"We have recovered 61 kg heroin, worth Rs 61 crores in the international market, this fiscal so far. These consignments were for USA and Canada," DRI Joint Director Dheeraj Rastogi said here. Intelligence officials attribute the sudden jump in the seizure of heroin to increased "usage" of Punjab by smugglers as transit route for delivering the consignments to other countries after procuring it from neighbouring countries. DRI seized 6 kg of heroin about two days back at Amritsar airport. PTI
