Chennai: The Chennai Corporation Council on Thursday adopted the Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, which allows re-election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Deputy Mayor R. Sathiyabhama conducted the meeting, as the post of Mayor is vacant. She will continue to chair the Council meetings till a Mayor is elected.

The amended Bill, passed in the Assembly on Tuesday, also permits the Corporation to convene a meeting of its Council at least once a month instead of once every three months.

The Council accepted the resignation of 98 councillors, including Mayor M. Subramanian. This will be officially communicated to the State Election Commission.

The Council meeting was scheduled for January 19 but cancelled for want of quorum (50 councillors). Friday's meeting saw the participation of 55 councillors, including K. Armstrong of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
