Houses adjourned till February 1

BANGALORE: Both Houses of the State legislature were adjourned till February 1 after Governor T.N. Chaturvedi's address to a joint session of the legislature on Thursday.

Deputy Speaker N.Y. Gopalakrishna adjourned the Assembly proceedings and N. Thippanna, who officiated as Chairman, did likewise in the Council.

ABVP State convention in Bellary

BANGALORE: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad will hold a three-day State-level convention in Bellary from February 2.

ABVP State secretary Prabhudev Kappagal told presspersons here on Thursday that the convention would be inaugurated by the Right Livelihood award-winner H.R. Sudarshan.

Elections to the executive committee of the ABVP would be held during the convention, he said.

On the second day, students of various colleges and ABVP members will take out a `Shoba Yatra' on prominent roads in Bellary. The yatra will be followed by a public meeting. — Staff Reporter

Eye camp in Tumkur today

TUMKUR: Ramakrishna Sevashram of Pavagada in Tumkur district will organise a free eye camp, exclusively for children, on its premises on Friday.

Sevashram president Swami Japananda told presspersons here on Thursday that Narayana Nethralaya of Bangalore and Sharadadevi Eye Hospital of Tumkur were supporting the camp.

Campaign launched against plastic

TUMKUR: Activists of Kannada Sene on Thursday launched a campaign against the use of plastic. Hundreds of them, including students, gathered at "Namad Chilume," a forest resort, in Devarayan Durga reserve forest area, and cleared the premises of plastic waste.

Office-bearers of the sene said the campaign would cover the entire Tumkur city.

They said that "Namad Chilume" attracted visitors from across the State and the area was being spoiled with plastic waste being thrown all around. — Staff Correspondent

Three hurt in explosion

HAsSAN: Three persons were injured following the explosion of barrels in which petrol was stocked "illegally" in Singarapatna village under Hassan (Rural) limits. Three houses have been damaged.The incident took place at 8.45 pm. Fire and Emergency Services personnel from Hassan and Holenarsipur have rushed to the spot. Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane said that DSP Rudrappa had been sent to the spot to supervise rescue operations. The injured have been admittedto Hassan Government Hospital. — Staff Correspondent

Visit to mining sites

BELLARY: A team led by Amar Kumar Pandey, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Forests), attached to the U.L. Bhat Commission, visited some mining sites in Sandur and Hospet taluks on Tuesday and Wednesday. — Staff Correspondent

R-Day function

HASSAN: Minister for Public Works H.D. Revanna who is also the district in charge will unfurl the national flag at the Government Stadium here on Friday, on the occasion of Republic Day. March past by school and college students, NCC cadets, Home Guards and the police will be followed by cultural events, according to Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda. Mr. Revanna will honour seven KSRTC drivers on the occasion. — Staff Correspondent
