Guwahati: Blasts triggered by suspected militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) rocked the State on the eve of Republic Day in which two persons, including a suspected militant, were killed and four others injured. Security measures in the State have been beefed up in view of the call by the ULFA to boycott the celebrations. Inspector-General of Police (Special Branch) Khagen Sharma told The Hindu that one person was killed and two were injured when a powerful improvised explosive device was exploded by the ULFA militants at a bus terminus in Rangiya town in Kamrup district. In another incident, a suspected ULFA militant, who was carrying a bomb, was killed when it exploded at Borhapjan in Tinsukia district on Thursday. The police suspected that the bomb was being taken to Tinsukia for sabotaging Republic Day celebration. A pedestrian, who was injured, was admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital at Dibrugarh, he said. Another blast occurred in the Ganeshguri area around 6.15 p.m. amid heightened security measures by the police and paramilitary forces. There was no casualty.
IED defused
The police recovered an improvised explosive device at a market in Lakhimpur district, which was later defused. Governor Lt. Gen. (retired) Ajai Singh, during an interaction with reporters, said the ULFA must abjure violence and return to the mainstream.
