SRINAGAR:
A suspected Islamic militant was shot and killed in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, officials said.
Soldiers cordoned off and surrounded a house in Kralpora after a tip that a rebel was hiding in the village, 35 km north of Srinagar, said Army spokesman Lt. Col. A.K. Mathur. As the troops closed in, the rebel opened fire, triggering a gun battle. However, Hizb, Kashmir's largest guerrilla group, in a telephone call to a local news agency, said soldiers killed the militant after taking him into custody. "The militant, Nazir Ahmed Shah, was arrested and later killed," Junaid-ul-Islam, a spokesman, told Current News Service. AP
