Revised growth plan for MUDA in the offing

Staff Correspondent

It might not include areas in the local planning area

  • The plan is revised once in 10 years as per the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act
  • The Comprehensive Development plan has seven different categories

MADIKERI: The Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) for the Madikeri Urban Development Authority (MUDA) is not likely to include areas in the local planning area, comprising the city municipal limits and nine surrounding villages, when it comes up for discussion here on January 29.

The plan is revised once in 10 years as per the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act. When the State Government approved the last plan, the area included 9,347 hectares in the Madikeri City Municipal Council limits and nine surrounding villages. Of this, a total of 1004.06 hectares was brought and approved under the plan, Commissioner in-charge, MUDA, K. Krishna Naik, told the Hindu on Thursday. Again, of the 1004.06 hectares, as much as 672.25 hectares was meant for residential, commercial, industrial and other users. For agriculture, 15.28 hectares was reserved and 302.03 hectares for forests. As much as 14.50 hectares was reserved as water sheets (tanks, reservoirs).

Since there is not much rise in the population of the city since 1991 census, the need for including additional areas in all categories in the plan look remote. The population of Madikeri city as per 1991 census was 28,750. It has now gone up to 32,496 as per the 2001 census. The local planning area consists of Madikeri city municipal limits and the villages of Karnangeri, Karawale-Badaga, Kalakeri-Nidugane, Makkandur, Hebbettageri, Ibnivalavadi, Kadagadal, Katakeri and Mekeri.

    Zoning regulations

As per the zoning regulations, there are seven different categories under the plan. The categories are residential, commercial, industrial, public and semi-public, utility and services zone, parks and open spaces and agriculture.
